A podcasting recording set up can be as inexpensive or expensive as you want it to be. A few questions to ask yourself before selecting and investing in your setup include:
Are you trying podcasting out for the first time?
In this case, you might want to start lean & inexpensive and upgrade your equipment as you build confidence & longevity.
Where will you be recording your podcast?
If you will be based in a single location, you can use a mic that plugs directly into your computer to record whereas if you will be on-the-go, you will more likely need a stand-alone recorder in addition to your mic to capture your recording.
How many people will be involved in the recording?
If you are a single host narrating alone, you can use a mic that plugs directly into your computer and record via software. If you have multiple guests who record from different locations, you can also each have a mic that plugs into your computer and record via software. However, if you have multiple guests and need to use multiple microphones in one location, you will need a connecting piece of hardware like an audio interface or mixer in order to accomodate multiple mics. (You cannot plug multiple USB mics into one computer as they will most likely interfere with each other's sound).
